Pip’s life was turned upside-down when Miss Havisham, the richest lady in Pip’s small town, asked to see him. When asked as to the purpose of the visit, Pip simply replied “she wanted to play with me.”
What may seem like a random meeting of chance and destiny actually turns out to be something much greater. Pip meets Estella for the first time which will influence his entire life’s goal and decisions. Beside vowing to become a gentlemen, she becomes his primary love interest throughout the story. Miss Havisham’s sudden interest also gives Pip the impression that his life has meaning, as some secretive benefactor believes Pip has… Great Expectations.
Oddly enough, his entire visit was a terrible experience for him. Escorted into a mansion without light by a beautiful girl that looked down upon him, meeting an "ancient" woman who asks him to "play for her" and being made fun of the entire time by Estella isn't exactly the foundation for a life's goal. But for Pip, he was willing to do anything it took to be accepted by Estella and Miss Havisham and turned into a gentlemen. The amount of shame and guilt Pip felt about him being a commoner and, subsequently, about his family would solidify that goal and would drive his life from there on out.
A young boy motivated by a benefactor with a dream of becoming a high-class gentlemen might seem like a noble goal, but in reality this beings to spin an unfortunate change in an innocent boy. In a society where social classes are chosen by birth, Pip has been given a rare and opportunistic entry ticket into the exclusive gentlemen’s club. Rising from a poor boy into a rich gentlemen, my sources say that his Great Expectations may be his downfall. What parts of his mind and soul will Pip give up in order to achieve his goal of becoming a gentlemen?
