SUDDEN DEATH SHOCK’S PIP’S LIFE

Following Pip’s reunion with Joe, another part of his past would meet him again. Mrs. Gargery, Pip’s sister, dies of the wounds she receives when an unknown assailant attacks her at home. Pip’s initial reaction was one of uncertainty; he didn’t know if he should be happy, sad, or something else. Nevertheless, he returns to his childhood home to pay his respects and visit his past, killing two birds with one stone.

Returning with a feeling of superiority and near-disgust, he still manages to pay his respects even when he had little. He decides to reunite with Biddy, for she did play a significant role in his “previous life.” What starts out as a peaceful visit soon turns into a revelation of character, as Pip believes that he was too good to visit them until something as significant as Mrs. Joe’s death took place. The blatant arrogance in Pip’s voice infuriated Biddy, believing that something had changed the old Pip into the new non-caring one.

It is at this point in Pip’s life where he slowly begins to realize that he has become all that he has attempted to avoided. Although at this point he doesn’t feel any regret and convinces him that he is right, the seeds of doubt and self-reflection have been planted in Pip’s mind.
