In a rather uneventful night, a strange and shady looking man appears at Pip’s doorstep. Gaining entry, his appearance betrays his importance, as he reveals a dangerous and shocking secret to Pip. The convict from Pip’s past reveals his true identity: he is Pip’s benefactor! Revealing that he was so touched by Pip’s kind actions as a child he decided to work hard and create a gentlemen, Pip’s life has been turned upside-down.
He no longer feels he has Great Expectations, as the benefactor is not Miss Havisham as he thought. He no longer feels that he has treated everyone fairly, as him being a gentleman has unfairly affected his past and its memories. Everything about his life has turned out to be a lie, when he has given up so much to life it.
Leaving a relatively stable and good life for the chance to become a rich gentlemen, he has hurt a lot of people, including himself, in the process. At the end of the day, Pip begins to rethink his entire life, not just the day’s or the week’s actions. His Great Expectations have fallen short, being replaced with guilt, shame, and regret.
