TRAGEDY AT SEA LEAVES ONE DEAD

The time had finally arrived for Pip and his crew to set their daring plan in action. Still sore from his dangerous encounter with Orlick, he found the determination inside himself to continue his plans. Choosing the next day to start, they quickly found their plans had gone horribly wrong when in the distance they saw a boat filled with customs officers and, surprisingly, Compeyson.

Panicked but determined, they rowed away with the police in hot pursuit. However, their focus on the other boat had left them blind when it came to the big steamer which was slowly inching closer, unaware of their presence. In their desperate struggle, both convicts (Magwitch and Compeyson) would fall out into the water. Unfortunately, both would come out in worser condition than they started. With Compeyson dead and Magwitch dying with a death sentence, Pip's feelings towards the whole incident are shattered.

He has a sense of disappointment, of guilt and shame, the very same feeling he felt when he was a child.

He feels the same as when he stole food from Mrs. Joe or when he was insulted by the beautiful Estella. Walking away with two more deaths in his life, his conscience is filled with thoughts on how everything fell apart, and the people he broke off with in order to become a gentleman. Pip has begun to feel regret, along with same and guilt and begins to start the road to recovering, or rather repairing, his old life.
