LOCAL GENTLEMAN PLAN'S ESCAPE

When the truth finally swept through Pip's mind and body, his first reaction was to keep his generous benefactor safe. Despite having dashed his Great Expectations, he still felt a degree of loyalty towards him for providing for his future and life. Hiding him in secret from the public eye under the punishment of death, they soon came to realize it was impossible for him to hide forever. An escape plan needed to be hatched, one that would get Magwitch out of London and from harm.

Working together with Herbert and eventually Startop, they would spend weeks planning out their plans and actions. Settling on using boats to sail out into the sea and boarding a steamer bound for a distant country, their plan was ready to be carried out. All they needed to do was deter suspicion from themselves and their boating and they were set.

When Pip realized how untrue everything he expected was, he was finally snapped out of his "gentleman's point of mind" and was able to see just what he had done. He saw his humble past, smeared with his uncaring and degenerative actions. He saw all the relationships he ruined simply by being a gentleman. He saw all that he had done with a new perspective, one that only the old Pip would have. When Pip is planning Magwitch's escape, he is finally ready to reverse all he has done.
