In the wake of Magwitch’s death and his increasing debt, Pip fell into the lowest point in his life. Out of money with no one to turn to, as Herbert moved to Cairo to pursue his fledgling business, he became extremely ill. Dreaming of hallucinations, he awakes and finds that he is in the care of his old and long time friend, Joe, who came to aid him in London.
Touched by his act of kindness, Pip begins to realize the monster he turned into. He now knows how money and the promise of being a gentleman can corrupt a man, and wishes for everything to go back “just like old times.” However, he would never get a chance to convey this wish towards Joe, who left one day leaving a note that said that Joe “didn’t want to intrude anymore” and that all his debts had been paid off.
Helped up but thrust back down again he is back in that aura of guilt and shame, and hates himself for creating it. He now knows how good of a past he had and how he gave it all up just at the off chance he’d have a better life being a gentleman, which in retrospect had more cons than pros.
