Arriving at Miss Havisham’s the second time, this time on her birthday, would give Pip a rare glimpse into the politics and life of a being a gentlemen or gentlewoman. He would be exposed to the “vultures” that prey on Miss Havisham’s vast wealth and her unwillingness to spend it out of her depression.
Meeting Sarah Pocket for the first time and being told of Matthew Pocket, who never visits her even on her birthday, will play an important part in Pip’s life later on… but for now Pip is only aware of the guests’ attempts to compliment Miss Havisham to gain her favor and hopefully a portion of her wealth.
After the party another noteworthy incident occurred, with Pip and a pale young gentlemen at the center of it.
While Pip is outside in the garden, a strange fellow approaches him and asks to fight. Pip gains a clear victory, and the gentlemen scurries off with Pip left in a state of confusion and guilt. However, he will soon be in a state of euphoria when Estella, who witnessed everything, says that Pip can kiss her if he’d like… to which he gladly accepts.
Vultures, fighting a young gentlemen, and finally kissing the love of his life are just a part of this memorable day for young Pip. Strangely enough, all three of those elements come back at one time or another in Pip’s life, for better or for worse.
